Musical Artist Biography

Doug Higgins playing all the brass on Montana Dreams

Mr. Higgins continues the development of the American tone poem characterized by its use of orchestra and jazz. His music is fresh, imaginative and exceedingly personal, with the composer's profound appreciation of creation, matched with his artistry in performance. Doug considers himself in some respects to be a naturalist and is a musician, composer and author. He is the founder of the Montana Brass record label and publishers.

Montana Native

Doug Higgins is a native of Montana and has enjoyed and experienced the natural beauty of the state. From his early childhood, his father taught him to fly fish and in college he worked for the U.S. Forest Service in his hometown of Troy Montana and later began to hike in the mountains of northwestern Montana and Idaho.

Yaak Homestead

HIs great-grandfather homesteaded in the Yaak valley where the family still owns the property - called the 'Buckhorn'. Mr. Higgins compositions reflect a simple life in Montana and its compelling beauty. In his early childhood, he was raised in Troy Montana. The family moved to Spokane Washington where he began to study trumpet and music theory. He continued his musical studies at Eastern Washington University majoring in music composition. He received a Bachelor of Music degree from Washington State University. Mr. Higgins taught music in Montana and Washington before he retired.

Musical Performances

Doug was a member of the Satin Brass in Spokane and the principle cornetist of the Spokane British Brass Band. He has performed with the Spokane Symphony and was the principle trumpet of the Sammamish Symphony.

Doug is currently studying composition and performing his music at the University of Montana in Missoula Montana. He is working towards a Master in Music Composition.
